Rising eastward from San Francisco bay are Oakland's North & South Hills. The area originated as a lumbering center and vacation retreat for San Franciscans. It has since evolved into a residential area known for its natural setting, forested character, architectural diversity, and spectacular views. The 1991 Firestorm affected the North Hills, however the area has been rebuilt and remains one of Oakland's most affluent residential neighborhoods. Major features include the bustling Montclair Village business district and the elaborate Chabot Space & Science Center, a state-of-the-art science and technology learning center affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution.
