Demographics Population The 2000 U.S. Census ranked Oakland as the eighth largest city in California with a population of 399,484. Oakland's diverse, well-educated population is attractive to both retailers in search of customers with disposable income and businesses in search of skilled workers. The California Department of Finance estimates Oakland's population as of January 1, 2007, at 415,492. To put Oakland's population in perspective, the city has a larger population than Minneapolis, MN; Miami, FL; St. Louis, MO; Pittsburgh, PA; Cincinnati, OH; Newark, NJ; and Louisville, KY. Oakland's population is more than twice that of Salt Lake City, UT, and nearly four times larger that Berkeley, CA.
The USA Today Diversity Index ranks Oakland as one of the two most diverse cities in the United States.
Income Given the per capita income of $21,936, Oakland residents have a total Household Income of nearly $9 billion. Nearly one-quarter of Oakland's households report household income in excess of $75,000.
