Five-Year
Implementation Plan 2004-2009

Acorn Progress Report - January 2008
The
Acorn Redevelopment Project Area in West Oakland covers
24.55 acres of land on 14 city blocks. It is 10 blocks from
Oakland’s downtown area, close to major employment
centers in Oakland and
San Francisco, with good public transportation access to
BART and AC Transit. The area is 50 percent industrial and
50 percent residential and has been redeveloped fully in
accordance
with the original redevelopment plan.
Several projects
have been completed since the development of the Acorn Redevelopment
Project Area. The ACORN development rehabilitation resulted
in 293 refurbished and redesigned rental units and 83 single-family
houses. A non-profit housing development rehabilitated the
Mohr housing development, correcting major blighting conditions
and assuring long-term affordability.
The Jack London Gateway Center (formerly the Acorn Shopping Center) was sold in 2006 to the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation which is renovating it and constructing senior housing on an unused part of the parking lot. The Center includes a community-serving grocery store as well as other services and fast food restaurants.
